Iowa State is an R1 research institution. All of our undergraduates can participate in high-level research and scholarship. You will have many opportunities to develop the analytical writing, research, critical thinking, and speech skills that build a strong foundation for law school.

How Cyclones prepare for law school

  • Build leadership and communication skills. Participate in student organizations (including Pre-Law Club), serve in elected office with Student Government, work as a teaching assistant, or lead supplemental instruction.
  • Practice your reading, writing, and research skills inside and outside of the classroom. Doing undergraduate research with faculty members is a great addition to your law school application.
  • Gain real-world experience through internships and job shadowing. Recent Cyclones have interned in county and U.S. attorney offices, for example.
  • Make plans for the LSAT, obtain recommendation letters, and research law schools. Your pre-law advisors can offer guidance.

One of the aspects I enjoyed most about [my] internship was the opportunity to interact with lawyers and observe them in action during trials and case work. Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the legal process.
